I got an interesting proposition from Татя to talk about our children and to discuss some pedagogical topics.
I have found one proper article for discussion on Friday, 08.10.10, at 11 PM of Moscow time. The name of article is

"Critical Thinking Exercises for Kids"

http://www.buzzle.com/articles/critical-thinking-exercises-for-kids.html

I propose also to discuss the questions:

Why development of critical thinking is important for children?
How you develop critical thinking by your children?

Of course, we continue our grammatical topics.

http://www.englishpage.com/verbpage/pastperfect.html

As usual, you can also write 20 sentences to this topic.

7 You had never seen such beautiful places before!
8 I know the region because I had lived there 3 years ago.

- You have never seen such beautiful places before.

(there is no point or necessity to use Past Perfect, it's superfluous. There is no time concordance in this sentence - for example,
if the sentence was "You had never seen such beautiful places before you came to Swiss Alps", then "had" would have been appropriate. wink1.gif

Simple Future
by Ivaschenko and Vasiliev

Someday all snow will disappear
The bed'll stop squeaking loud songs
And ducks will not quack-quack in here
But they will dance and sing along.
Someday all taps will be repaired
And water'll be as clear as sky
Bad guys will be a little better
Someday, someday, or maybe night.

Someday someday someday someday
I'd take a look at that, I would
If only could

All soldiers'll get a discharge ticket
To go to cinemas or clubs
And bingo tournaments and cricket
Will take their place in yards and parks
And our eyes will brighten up, and
Those will be quiet, who were rude
And if someone is a bloody bastard
He'll be excused, but not approved.

Someday someday
We will be lead somewhere away
By our way
Someday someday
We'll turn each other up side down
In our town
Someday someday
I'd take a look at that, I would
If only could

Аленький Цветочек, thanks a lot!

Well then, here are the ideas for the sentences.
Some of them could describe what is happening at the moment, but put in the Future Tense. For example, I can see now, that my cat is sleeping, and that it is raining outside. So I can write a sentence about it, but put it in the Future Continuous Tense. I will get 2 sentences:
The red cat will be sleeping on a yellow blanket in an hour.
It will be raining at that time tomorrow.

Some of them could be a translation or an interpretation of Russian(or any other) fiction.

Other sentences could describe past events but in the Future Tense.

What do you think of the ideas?

Since I didn't have a chance to share my point of view on the topic due to unstable internet connection I would like to present it here.

I remember when I first read about the bystander's effect, I was shocked. Though such situations do not happen often.

Then I also read about what kind of people usually help others in potentially dangerous situations that includes violence and stuff like that. What kind of people are Good Samaritans? It appears that the Good Samaritans usually have more experience in coping with difficult situations than people who do not do anything. They often have more police, medical, or lifesaving training. And often they do something not because they have pity, or sympathy, or other nice feelings to a victim, but because they know what should be done and how it should be done, and because they feel that they are strong and capable enough to deal with the situation. So their primary motivation is not humanitarian feelings but a sense of their competence and responsibility. icon_confused.gif

Though I understand that to call a police not much training or skills needed. icon_smile.gif

The topic is Positive Thinking Tips

http://www.buzzle.com/articles/positive-thinking-tips.html

Автор: Татя 11.11.2011 - 02:38
As I missed the last conversation, I would like to write down my opinion on the topic.
A similar topic (about friendship) was brought up in the main forum. So I will probably repeat myself.

I believe that people become friends when they do something together. It can be a hobby - as the article suggests, - or a joint project, or something that is easier and more enjoyable done together.

I am going to reminisce about where I found friends.
I found a lot of new friends when I joined the Tourism club in my University. We met for a training twice a week, and besides we spent our student vacations going on trips around Belarus, to Karelia, Turkmenistan, Crimea, Ukraine and Caucasus.
I met my husband on a tourist trip.
Then I started to do sport orienteering and met a lot of friends there too.
When my son was a baby, we became friends with another girl who lived near by and also had a little son. I wrote about it in the other topic on forum. We took walks with our children together.
A lot of my friends on Facebook, Odnoklassniki, and VKontakte are from the theater where I volunteer, from the college where I took classes, and also from the Syntone and Mosaic forums - though I never met some of them in person.

There is a proverb that goes like this: when there's a will there's a way. A similar proverb - though not a corollary of the previous one - says: when there's a 'why' there's a 'how'. icon_smile.gif

How to Stop Worrying
http://www.buzzle.com/articles/how-to-stop-worrying.html

Автор: Татя 24.11.2011 - 21:13
I would like to jot down a couple of words on the topic 'How to stop worrying' since I missed the last meeting. Hope to talk to everyone on Skype next time!

Many people worry about something from time to time. It is OK if it does not happen too often and helps people to understand what is precious to them.

I have several ways to deal with worrying.
One of them is to continue doing what I was doing, ignoring my worrying. Or better yet, not ignoring but accepting my worries. In some situations I say to myself:
OK, I'm worried. So what? I am still going to do this and that.
Or:
I will try to do this and see what will happen.
Sometimes it is not worth trying to fight this feeling of worrying. It is better to accept it.

Another way to deal with it is to stop worrying about things that are not important. It makes life so much easier.

There is a catch here though. Some things are not important for me, but are important for other people. If it is not too difficult for me, and I can do it, why not do it?

Yet another way to stop worrying is to talk to a wise person about things. It helps to express emotions outward, understand the situation better, and get an opinion from another point of view.

Also, sometimes it helps me just to do some physical exercises or to turn some good music on to feel better.

Ice Breaker Questions for Adults
http://www.buzzle.com/articles/ice-breaker-questions-for-adults.html

Автор: Татя 2.12.2011 - 21:57
About last Sunday topic. "Ice Breaker Questions for Adults"

I find it easier to start a conversation saying something about a situation where that conversation takes place. For example, if we are in a room(or building), I can say something about that room or building. Or I can say something about my way to that place, and how and why I got there.

If I meet a person in my house - for example my son's friend, - I usually ask that person about things. If I never met him or her, I still know something about that person, and can ask about it.
It's easier for me to start a conversation than to continue it.

Sometimes people I meet start a conversation. In that case I can just reply to what they are saying, and it's less complicated.
In any case I try not to rely completely on other person talking to me, but also think of some ways to continue a discussion.

On 'Psychology of Impulse Shopping' that I missed.

I agree with the author of the article on the following idea.

Retailers and sales people make everything possible to make their products attractive to the customers.
I think it's a good idea to know about the tricks that retailers use to lure the customers to buy something. First of all it can help a customer to decide whether he/she needs the product and buy only what he/she needs. And second, it can help a customer to appreciate all the effort that the sales people make to attract them.

A friend of mine told me a story once. She and her other friend, being students and having no spare money, often went to a particular store that they liked - not to buy anything, but just to look and feel good about such beautiful things they saw in the store. They enjoyed it very much. icon_smile.gif

Also, I think that when people know exactly what they need, they are less likely to buy something unnecessary.
Depending on the season of a year, or a life period, we could be attracted to completely different products. It could be kids' clothes and toys at some point, home appliances at another, and so on.

Let"s try to organise conference tomorrow at 8 pm with the same topic.

As far as I catch, last conference failed because Synthone server was down. I'd advice to all future members to copy the article and so we'll be free from server problems (maybe Sunday evening is reserved for site reconstruction?)
I've already copied the article, so I'll take part

If you forgive the intrusion - read this article today and thought of you, guys. Seemed very interesting to me.

The myth of the eight-hour sleep.

I suppose for those whose English is only starting to develop, you can always cheat by using "Google Translate the whole webpage", understand what it is about (the Google machine translation will be very rough), and then read and learn more consciously, trying to soak up the language constructions and the new vocabulary.

An excellent source for an online dictionary is also multitran.ru. I use it a lot.

Hope you don't mind the intrusion - saw these two pieces of info and loved them.

1. Why bilinguals are smarter

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/18/opinion/sunday/the-benefits-of-bilingualism.html

about the proof that bilingual children develop faster and are more intelligent in the long run. The text and vocabulary is quite hard, but it's the best way to learn and improve! icon_smile.gif

The collective evidence from a number of such studies suggests that the bilingual experience improves the brain’s so-called executive function — a command system that directs the attention processes that we use for planning, solving problems and performing various other mentally demanding tasks. These processes include ignoring distractions to stay focused, switching attention willfully from one thing to another and holding information in mind

2. Presentation
http://www.ted.com/talks/michael_shermer_the_pattern_behind_self_deception.html
или почему люди верят в невероятное (и порой совершенно дремучее). There is an explanation to the tendency to want to believe various pseudoscientific stories.
Again, the language is hard, but even if you understand some of it, it's great, as the thoughts there are just fantastic.
