"Plastic bags banned forever
In May 2007 all 43 shops in the Devon town of Modbury stopped handing out plastic carrier bags. After a six-month trial, Modbury has now become a permanent plastic bag-free zone.
Since then at least 50 towns, villages and cities in the UK have announced plans to bin their plastic bags.
The town's shopkeepers are determined to do their bit for the environment by keeping the campaign going.
Instead of using plastic bags, shoppers are asked to use 100% biodegradable alternatives made from corn starch, canvas, paper or cotton."
I would like to ask you:
1. would you be able to live without any plastic thing in your house?
2. are you ready to refuse to use plastic bags?
3. what do you think about this compaign? Are you proud of the organizators or you think it is all in vain?

I wouldn’t refuse all of them, for sure, though I don't mind having less of them

Yes, they are crapy and not stylish, and I HATE PEOPLE REUSING THEM!!!!!!!!!! And it's very bad for the environment to use some plastic thing just once.

It's cool, but it's only plastic bags,

I sort the garbage
I switch off the electricity immediately when I don't need it
I use bus instead of car
I don't eat much meat
and I don't drink cola:) .. but it's not for the environment, just my health.

Yes, it is. Growing animals in order to kill them is BAD for the environment. Especially since western countries have much more food than they actually need. Just take a quick look at how fat the majority of westerners is!

Ann, isn't it much to hate people just because they reuse plastic bag? Well, in this case, I think, they help the environment, don't you think so?
Refusing to use plastic bags is cool for you, isn't it? Do you know how many people live on the Earth? Imagine every person throws away at least one plastic bag a day. And it is not paper. I mean, if you throw it on the Earth it will NEVER disappear. Cool??????
The bus and the car use the same petrol (not the same kind, of course). If you had told us that you use a bike instead of a car I would have been very proud of you.
The westerns are fat not because they eat meat (every person needs 50-100gr of meat every day), but because they eat fast-food, and don't move a lot (since we have cars, buses and computers).

I think it`s not a good idea to prohibit useful inventions that do our life more comfortable.

I don`t see any reasons for it.

Frankly speaking, I think that it`s nonsense. If any people don`t like something, they may not use it and that`s all. I don`t understand and don`t approve such compaings.
In some countries it`s easy and healthy to refuse wearing fur clothes or eating meat, but in cold climate it`s unreasonable.

I hate such questions. It looks like somebody tries to press another`s opinion on me.

FYI: In English language: "I hate people reusing them" = "I hate when people reuse them"

Known facts about the environment friendly behavior:
- The reason for not using plastic bags is NOT throwing them away, but NOT manufacturing them.
- Modern bus carries hundred of people, and uses the same amount of petrol as 2 cars. If each of 100 people would use a car. You do the math!

Please search Google if you need more info about saving the environment and preventing global warming.

About overweighed people:
Don't mix Americans and Europe, please. People are not that fond of fast food in Europe. And, by the way, human being does not NEED meat; s/he can receive the necessary amount of proteins from fish and protein-rich vegetables. Please search Google for more details.

I would be happy to discuss envionmental issues with you, but let's read the basics first, shall we? I am sure you do not have time either for talking without a matter.

Ann, I agree with you about NOT manufacturing plastic bags, but anyway if you throw away the plastic in a gabage box for plastic and then it will be recycled and reused isn't it "the environment friendly behaviour"?

Secondly, as for the bus, you go by bus not because you want to save the environment as you told us, but because it's more comfortable and cheaper for you. If you realy thought about the environment on your way to work you would use a bike. That's what I meant.

Thirdly, as for the Westerns, I live in Italy (it's Europe isn't it? or do I need to search in Google? ) and I see that they eat a lot of fast food during the day . And I don't think that you can be fat just because you eat meat (of course if you are healthy)

I have seen a comparison between plastic bags and paper bags.

Both have their strengths and weaknesses, and I was not able to choose a clear winner. One of the biggest reasons against plastic bags was that they might clog the sorting equipment in the garbage recycling process.

In my state they offer a choice in the big stores.

Anna, if I were you, I wouldn't expect the Tiger to become a vegetarian . Expecting otherwise might get you in tRRRRRRRouble: guess whose meat the Tiger might become interested in .

As for me (because I have started this topic and haven't told you my opinion) I wouldn't refuse to use plastic bags (Rose is right they are very useful), and I wouldn't agree to use paper bags instead (the trees must be fallen down), the thing that I would like to do is to recycle and reuse plastic things, I know this is a kind of utopia, but anyway.

Not using plastic bags is not going to get us anywhere. What's the alternative?
As far as global warming is concerned, Anna, I suggest that you read more up-to-date scientific research on it. Latest studies have shown that the whole theory of connection between the mentioned environmental issues and global warming is false, and it has been proven to be ludicrous by a number of scientists. They genuinely do not know the reasons for global warming, it's as simple as that.
So it still remains to be seen.
As far as recycling is concerned: a friend works in the industry and has a degree in environmental studies, and he says that a lot of times the process of recycling proves to be more energy-consuming than manufacturing goods from scratch. So what is the point?

It is all not all black and white, dear Anna, and the topic remains rather under-researched and thus, controversial. So it's too early to say anything or have harsh judgements on the subject.


Not sure about the connection between eating meat and the environmental issues.

As for answers to the author:

1. Don't think so.
2. If I have an alternative, why not indeed.
3. In the light of the above, as we don't know for sure that it brings a definitive benefit, - no, I am not proud.
4. Will think about that one!
