Americanization [ How deep is it ]

I would like to speak about the Americanization which means McDonald's, american films, jeans, chewing gum, Coca Cola. How do you find this process? Would you like to stop it and why? how does it change russian yougth? Is there anything good in it?

As for me I don't think I like this process in a whole, because other nations lose their individuality, their peculiaritys. They become very similar, very alike.

I don`t realise Americanization as a problem.
I like to visit McDonald's sometimes, but more often I cook traditional Russian meals at home .
Jeans are very comfortable clothes in some situations and I it seems unsuitable to wear traditional Russian costume now.
Chewing gum is a bad habit, Coca Cola is a not very useful drink and nothing more.
America has its own history and culture, it`s as intresting as the history and culture of any other land, and it`s not intresting to see any stupid films, not only American.
If I will have my own family and children sometimes, I will tell them all this, but I can`t think about all the Russian young people.

What kind of Americanization do you mean? Is it speaking English in Russian-language site?

It`s just education!

Amerikanization is the global process. Other countries are involved too.
In a broad manner of it differen cultures are mixing. It is globalization.
But I don`t think, that other nations lose their individuality finaly. We must take the best things from other and keep our identity. For example, we have phenomenon "ярмарка", which come from german "Jahrmarkt" (annual markt).

Well, I don't want to take it too deep. At first let's speak about american films which are 70-80% of the films we watch. I think, there are some good things they teach us, but mostly it's violence, money, career, is it good for our youth? would you let your children watch them?
Secondly, there is another thing that irritates me greatly - it is always the fault of russians (we are criminals in all their films, C.S.I. for example)! do americans do it for some purpose? have you noticed it?

USA has good developed cinema industry. Realy huge number of their films appears every year. There are some marvelous films , I find.
I wouldn"t let watch my children many things, not just amerikan films.

About McDonald"s. In the Europa is most popular fast food not from McDonald"s, but from turkish Kebab (some sort of shaurma). It is one more good example of globalization.

Well, I cannot say about all Europe, but surely I can speak about Italy. It's very suprising but the prices in italian Mc'Donald's are lower than in Moscow, it means that it's not very popular here. The italians are used to eat out at least one time a week, noone of them would go to any restaurant but italian. Where do the russians go to eat out? american Mc.Donald's? italian pizzerias? chinese restaurants? why is it so?

For everybody:
Such words as "russian", "italian". "turkish", "chinese" and the like should be capitalized - "Russian", "Italian". "Turkish", "Chinese". Please pay more attention to it.

We also go to Italian pizzerias; Chinese, Japanese, and Yugoslavian restaurants. We want something else, something new. We want to try something which we can’t cook at home. When we are in Russia, we go where we can enjoy pilmeni, pancakes and Russian pies. But Russians cook this at home, so they go to different restaurants. There’s no surprise there. Here, we don’t drink Coke. Normal families understand that Coke is unhealthy, and buy either juice or lemonade, which is also unhealthy, but manageable.

Now, onto the topic of movies. When I grew up in the Soviet, most of the movies were based on wars and military. Now, the movies are mainly action-based. There were, and still are comedies, dramas, etc. Kids don’t become violent just from movies. It all revolves around the way they were raised at home. Kids can become violent just from watching live-scenes at home and around them.

I partialy agree with your point of view, but imagine a normal russian family - both parents work and a child after school (if there is no pissibility to leave him with grandparents) watches TV. What he sees he learns. And is there any good in what he sees? What cartoons can you name that are without violence? None! Remember the cartoons we watched when we were children, now everything is different, and I think this "different" comes from the USA.

There are many cartoons from China and Japan too with big number of scenes of
violense. In the normal, I mean, realy normal family is all controlled, what is watched by chidren.

I think it would be better to say the phrase realy normal family is all controlled, what is watched by chidren like in a family, which is really normal, everything what is being watched by children on TV, is controlled.
